傑克是一個大汽車公司的職員，也是一個充滿着中年危機意識的人，他非常憎恨自己的生活和周圍的一切，再加上患有嚴重的失眠症，於是爲了自我救治，他突發奇想，決定參加團體諮詢會。傑克先是參加了那些絕症患者的相互撫慰團體，他接觸到了一個全部由患睾丸癌的人組成的社團，傑克和他們互相撫慰和哭泣，而且上了癮。

一天，傑克遇到了賣肥皂的商人泰勒，他是一個渾身充滿叛逆、殘酷和暴烈的行動力量的痞子英雄。剛一見面，泰勒就向傑克提出了一個奇怪的要求，他要傑克痛打自己一頓，在對打中，傑克體會到了搏鬥的樂趣，兩人因緣際會地成了好友。他們開始創建“搏擊俱樂部”：一個讓人們不戴護具而徒手搏擊，宗旨在於發泄情緒的組織。俱樂部制定了一系列的活動規則：不許向他人談論俱樂部，只允許兩人對打等等。

地下俱樂部開始吸引着越來越多的人，逐漸發展成爲一個全國性的地下組織，所有的成員都將泰勒視爲教父。泰勒以自己的個性魔力和行動哲學吸引着那些盲從的人，他變得越來越偏激，他讓成員們到處滋事打架，到處搞破壞，砸汽車、放火、向顧客的食物中小便，他的行爲越來越瘋狂。

傑克對於“搏擊俱樂部”的現況及泰勒的行爲越來越無法忍受，同時，他還驚訝地發現泰勒還組織了一支軍隊，他要對社會實行更大的報復。傑克決定疏遠泰勒，但讓他驚訝的.是，每到一處，他都被認爲是泰勒，並被尊爲教父。這讓傑克受到了不小的打擊，他開始反思自己到底是誰，泰勒是誰。最終他驚恐地發現，原來自己就是“泰勒”，泰勒是“我”的人性中的另一面，“我”和“泰勒”是彼此的影子和幻象。

傑克向警察自首，泰勒也追蹤而至，在他們的撕打搏鬥中，泰勒手中的槍自然地、魔術一般跑到傑克的手中。傑克無法擊中泰勒，於是將槍口對準了自己，可當槍響時，傑克卻發現被擊中的人變成了泰勒，他化成了一道輕煙。
